My daughter loves American Girl Dolls with a passion, the dolls, accessories, clothes-all of it! I am pretty crazy about them myself so tend to indulge this obsession. She has a Bitty Baby, 2 Girl of the Year Dolls ( Isabelle 2013 and Grace Thomas 2014), and this year she has another one ready to go under the tree on Christmas Eve- Kit, a BeForever Girl. Kit is a beautiful girl from the 1930’s with chin length blonde hair and a pretty outfit. She is adorable- right down to her detailed shoes. I enjoy the BeForever girls as they inspire a love of learning about different time periods in history-as a homeschooling mom, I love that! I am trying really hard to reduce the quantity of my childrens toys and replace it with quality- American Girl is definitely that! They are a special gift that little girls dream of -perfect for a Christmas Gift! All regular priced items are 20% with code GIFT2o through December 12th!!
I like to use whatever interests them to teach my children, here is how I use our American Girl Dolls to encourage my little girl to responsibility and learning:
Caring for the doll- American Girl doll hair, especially long hair needs special care. We have a special wig brush that should be used on them, it is more gentle than a human brush on doll hair. The skin of the dolls also requires some gentle upkeep from time to time. These are good things to let your child be responsible for with your help. Kit is a wonderful first doll for girls who are upgrading from Bitty Babies- Her short hair is much easier to care for. You can find hair care tips and how to videos HERE on their site.
Use Their Story– The BeForever girls have a background story. We can use the period in history the doll is from to create a unit study and encourage learning. Kit has a chicken keeping outfit that you can purchase, this can be used to introduce baby chickens and their care to a child- feeding, watering, cleanup, etc. They each come with a book and there are additional books for purchase that make for wonderful reading time.
Reward and Discipline– Children can save up on their own for a doll or it can be used as a reward for a year of excellent grades, children who give of themselves generously by donating their time and talents with no ulterior motive, a child who has completed or needs extra comfort during rigorous medical procedures. If I find my child is not taking care of her doll or is letting other responsibilities slide she may find she has lost her favorite toy until she demonstrates responsibility.
Which is your favorite American Girl Doll?
